Viru’s best

with 7 comments

Viru’s best innings in his 67 Test career :
  1. 195 vs Australia, MCG, 2003
  2. 201 vs SL, Galle, 2008
  3. 180 vs Aus, Chennai, 2004 (or 200 not sure)
  4. 309 vs Pak, Multan 2004
  5. 153 vs Aus, Adelaide 2008

He is an asset to the Test team and his starts would chalk the future of India in Tests ahead. He should easily finish with 10000 test runs provided he remains fit.

He is close to 6000 runs in 67 tests and had he not missed those 9 tests in 2006-07 when Dilip Vengsarkar shamelessly promoted his state mate Wasim Jaffer on his expense, Sehwag would have got even more big scores.

A big score in Tests is due since long now. Better

  3. Can't argue with that list but his debut hundred at Bloemfontein, SA, must also figure somewhere for the sheer audacity of it in the situation it came in.

He partnered Sachin in giving respectability t the Indian first innings, facing a raging Nantie Hayward, a Pollock at his peak, Klusener in touch and a tearaway Ntini, after they had brought India down to its knees in double quick time. India lost eventually, but defiance was announced on the field there…an Indian attack weapon was unveiled.

Then, personally speaking, his 201 against Pakistan at B'lore when all Indian wickets were falling away around him like dead flies, except for Laxman's brief innings in the required circumstances, would stand alongside all those innings because it typified the new character he contributed to the overall personality of Indian cricket history….counterattacking defiance in the face of adversity…one soldier blazing away at the enemy in the face of a hail of bullets which cut down his mates…holding the flag up for his country…dead keen on taking the aggressors down with him, if not conquer them singlehandedly…a little different from the seiges we are familiar with otherwise in Indian cricket.

The hunters, in these innings, appear to win by overwhelming through sheer numbers eventually, but for as long as Viru was laying into them, they distinctly look the hunted on the run.

Of course, I memtion the two innings only because lists are meant to be chewed upon!

D@mn, we are lucky to have seen some of the best Indian batsmen over the past four decades…easily the cream of all-time Indian batsmanship…each with a different trait to contribute.

  4. His 83(68) in the post tea session Chennai 08 v Eng has to be there…..

That basically turned the match on its head, given the propensity of the Indians to choke/die chasing even modest 4th innings targets….
