RIP Chaminda Vaas

with 5 comments

Chaminda Vaas retired today from the Test cricket. He would be perhaps only cricketer to end up as Triple Nelson (111 Tests).. So the Lankan media was correct that this test was being a farewell for this first world class fast bowler from Lanka….

He would be best remembered for being the first Lankan to take 10-for abroad and getting their first victory abroad in NZ in 1995.

Not sure he would be around to play ODIs and T20 till 2011 as he says.

He was the only world class Test bowler in the SL side along side Murali. But he has laid the foundation where the budding SL bowlers can emulate him.

In a way he was Kapil Dev for Sri Lanka.

His success mostly came against West Indies, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. Against top Test teams he wasnt that successful, but then subcontinent wickets have hardly assisted fast bowlers. His contribution to SL test cricket is no less than Murali, just that later got more wickets. Murali and Vaas were like Twilight vampires who hunted in pairs :).

  3. Yet We'll all miss Vassy…..

He was a true legend and always will be and I'm sure he'll be back in 2011…..

  4. Vaas will remain the best swing bowler for Sri Lanka. Together with Murali they share 1100+ test wickets. No other Sri Lankan bowler has more than 100 wickets. He was very hard to get away when ball swung.

  5. Bamble , I really appreciate the fact that Vaas was rightfully and deservedly termed as the Kapil Dev of SL bowling . I remember there were lot of mediocre bowlers like Labrooy and others who had shown sparks but Vaas was the only one to have seen them true the thick and the thin isn't it ?
